EXT. WOODS OF PUBLIC PARK DAY
Fourteen-year-old HENRY WALES is in the woods not far from his suburban home, playing paintball with half a dozen other boys his age. He plays seriously and passionately.
As he sneaks up on a boy, BRANDON, to shoot him from behind, HENRY remembers the day his father left him and his mother and his older sister.
[FLASHBACK] INT. THE WALES HOUSE NIGHT
HENRY watches as HENRY SENIOR, distraught and angry, attempts to leave the house. HENRY SENIOR is near the front door, carrying a garment bag. HENRY’s mother, MONA, clings to her husband’s arm.
MONA
Look at your father, Henry. Look at
him walking out on us. Who’s going
to take care of us?
HENRY SENIOR
It seems to me you’ve already got
too many men taking care of you.
MONA lets go of his arm.
MONA
If I had a gun, I’d shoot you in the
head, you bastard.
EXT. WOODS OF PUBLIC PARK DAY
In the present, HENRY shoots
All the other boys converge on HENRY. He is alone against them all as they shoot at him.
Images of his father are interjected into the scene as HENRY shoots back.
Finally, he retreats, re-loading his gun as he runs through the woods.
When HENRY trips, the boys catch up to him and all shoot him as he lies on the ground.
HENRY
(yelling)
You’re all a bunch of bastards!
JOSH, a friend of HENRY’s, signals for everyone to stop shooting.
JOSH
(trying to
lighten the mood)
It’s just a game, dude.
Man, look at that! Look! It’s
a girl!
All the boys are looking where
JOSH:
Hey, Henry, isn’t that your
sister?
HENRY looks and sees his seventeen-year-old sister, BRANDY, running through the woods in a bikini. Pursuing her is an overweight, middle-aged man, KREBS, wearing army fatigues and carrying a paintball gun.
HENRY runs toward KREBS, screaming.
JOSH
Hey, Henry, what you doing?
Man,
HENRY plows into the man, knocking him to the ground.
KREBS sprawls on the ground.
KREBS
Jesus Christ, kid!
What’s your problem?
You trying to kill me?
HENRY
(his paintball
gun in KREB’s face)
Krebs. What are doing chasing my
sister?
BRANDY has run up to them.
BRANDY
Henry, you idiot!
She bends down to KREBS and takes his arm to help him up.
BRANDY
Are you all right, Mr. Krebs?
HENRY
Put some clothes on, Brandy.
Go home.
KREBS
(red-faced)
You’re in big trouble, you little . . . .
HENRY
Screw you.
KREBS
What? What did you say to me?
BRANDY
Don’t pay any attention to him,
Mr. Krebs. Henry has a condition
real bad. It makes him cuss
uncontrollably.
HENRY
What the hell, Brandy?
BRANDY
(to Krebs)
See?
INT. THE
HENRY and BRANDY burst through the front door into their house, both calling for MONA. BRANDY has shorts and a t-shirt on now.
BRANDY
Mona!
HENRY
Mom!
MONA is drunk on the living room sofa, watching Jerry Springer.
BRANDY
This lame excuse for a brother
screwed up a special job I was
doing for Mr. Krebs.
HENRY
Yeah, a real special job.
She was running around in
the woods, naked.
MONA
Yeah?
BRANDY
I had a bikini on. He was going
to pay me fifty bucks to let him
chase me with a paintball gun.
HENRY
What was he going to do when he
caught you?
BRANDY has gone into the bathroom and has come back out with a washcloth and is trying to scrub paint stains off her legs.
BRANDY
He just wanted to shoot me.
MONA
Fifty bucks not bad, girl.
BRANDY
I have to slave away for like
seven hours at his stupid Taco
Yummy to make fifty bucks.
He’s actually kind of nice when he’s
not stressing out over broken taco
shells. . . . He says I remind
him of Paris Hilton.
HENRY
What’s next, Brandy? Porn movies?
BRANDY pauses in her scrubbing and looks at HENRY, her mouth open.
BRANDY
You really mean that?
HENRY
Yeah.
BRANDY
You really think I’m hot enough
to get hired for a porn movie?
HENRY stares at her.
The doorbell rings and HENRY gets the door.
It’s HENRY SENIOR in his police officer’s uniform. HENRY is surprised.
HENRY
What are you doing here?
